Shooting

25m Men’s Rapid Fire Pistol

China’s Li Yuehong clinched gold on Monday in the 25m men’s rapid fire pistol event, finishing with 32 hits out of 40 targets—seven more than silver medalist Cho Yeongjae of South Korea. Wang Xinjie of China took home the bronze.

The competition featured an electronic scoring system to measure hits within a 12.4-centimeter bulls-eye. Starting with six competitors, the field narrowed to four after four rounds of five shots each, fired within four seconds. In a shootoff for fourth place, Wang defeated Germany’s Florian Peter 4-2.

Li, the world record holder with 39 out of 40 hits and currently ranked world No. 2, entered the final stage leading Cho by 2 points and Wang by 3. A strong performance in Round 7 increased his lead to 3 points over Cho, and he secured the gold with a perfect 5-for-5 performance in the final round. This victory marked Li’s first gold medal, having previously won bronze in the 2016 Rio and 2020 Tokyo Games.

Women’s Skeet

Meanwhile, Francisca Crovetto of Chile won the gold medal in women’s skeet at the 2024 Paris Olympics, defeating Great Britain’s Amber Rutter in a shoot-off at the Chateauroux Shooting Center on Sunday. Both competitors scored 55 after 60 shots, but Crovetto triumphed 7-6 in the shoot-off, marking Chile’s first Olympic shooting gold and making her the first woman to win an Olympic gold for her country. Rutter missed a shot in her final round, which she contested but officials rejected, while Crovetto successfully hit both her last targets to secure the win. Austen Smith of the United States earned the bronze medal, coached by Vincent Hancock, who won gold in men’s skeet the previous day.

Women’s 25 Meter Pistol

Also, South Korea’s Yang Ji-In won gold in the women’s 25 meter pistol competition at the Paris Olympics. France’s Camille Jedrzejewski won silver, marking France’s first shooting medal in the city. Hungary’s Veronika Major claimed the bronze in a shoot-off, preventing India’s Manu Bhaker from securing a third medal. American Katelyn Abeln finished in eighth place in her Olympic debut.

Inaugural Mixed Team Skeet

Italy won gold in the mixed team skeet competition at the 2024 Paris Olympics with a 45-44 victory over the American duo of Vincent Hancock and Austen Smith. China won bronze with a score of 44-43 against the Indian team. Hancock won his fifth Olympic medal with four gold and one silver, while Smith won bronze in the women’s skeet. Smith expressed her gratitude for the opportunity to compete with Hancock and praised his resilience after a tough day. Hancock commended her for her perseverance and said they gave it their all. They have proven to be unbeatable and constantly improve for each other. Smith’s quick recovery and outstanding performance today are a testament to her determination. Hancock is incredibly proud of her for pushing through and giving it her all.

Triathlon

At the 2024 Paris Olympics, three triathlon events yielded three different winners: France’s Cassandre Beaugrand claimed gold in the women’s individual event, Great Britain’s Alex Yee triumphed in the men’s individual, and Germany’s Laura Lindemann further led her team to victory in the mixed team relay.

The mixed team event therefore featured athletes from Germany (Tim Hellwig, Lisa Tertsch, Lasse Lurs, and Laura Lindemann), the United States (Seth Rider, Taylor Spivey, Morgan Pearson, and Taylor Knibb), and Great Britain (Alex Yee, Georgia Taylor-Brown, Sam Dickins, and Beth Potter). Great Britain aimed to repeat their gold from Tokyo, bringing back half of their winning team. However, in a dramatic finale, Lindemann surged ahead of Potter to secure Germany’s gold. The USA’s Knibb outpaced Potter in a photo finish to take silver, leading to a confusion about medal placements; Great Britain was initially awarded silver but ultimately received bronze after a review.

So, France faced challenges as Pierre Le Corre crashed during the first leg of the men’s individual event, finishing in fourth place.
