Sci-fi Action: Fight for Survival
This film throws everything at the sci-fi kitchen sink, while filling the distant planet with a lightning storm, a tornado, a sinkhole, and a snowy glacier. To survive this chaotic landscape, Jennifer Lopez’s tough, logical character must team up with an AI system housed within a massive mechanical suit, armed with guns, bombs, and ten-foot-long metal limbs.
“Atlas” attempts to be a thrilling fight for survival and a thought-provoking commentary on the dangers of AI. However, it fails on both fronts due to its shallow, unengaging, and immature writing.
The screenplay is original with no previous source material, but it’s written with so little wisdom, care, thoughtfulness, and believability, I could only think of other sci-fi films that Atlas has shamelessly borrowed from.
Netflix has released the Atlas [Official Trailer 2024], hinting at its availability on their streaming platform. However, critics haven’t been kind to the film, with many calling it a contender for the worst movie of the year. Although the movie’s IMDb page lists it as an upcoming release, it lacks a specific release date.
